The Almost Moon
Anyone that read the extremely popular 2002 best seller - The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold which burst onto the publishing scene like an uncharted comet becoming a phenom may want to pick up her latest novel "The Almost Moon". Finally after a long wait of 5 years, Sebold is back with her newest novel and like The Lovely Bones, this book captures and deals with a subject matter that not to many writers want to confront and deal with, but Sebold manages to deal with the emotionally charged subject on many levels. Again she manages to write an opening line that is a grabber, "When all is said and done, killing my mother came easily. Dementia, as it descends, has a way of revealing the core of a person affected by it. My mother's core was rotten like the brackish water at the bottom of a weeks-old vase of flowers."
The story's narrator is its main character Helen Knightly a woman in her mid forties, divorced and taking care of her aging mother that has dementia (Claire). My question through most of the book was "will she get away with murder"? I am not going to tell you anymore-you'll need to pick up a copy for yourself-it is another page turner.
If you want to hear more on this author-"Freshair with Terry Gross on NPR did an interview with Alice Sebold you can catch it online or click here.
If you read The Lovely Bones, you will most likely remember the opening line, it is unforgettably grim and an authors dream- it's a grabber. It gripps you on the first page and draws the readers into the book, in this case, never letting you put it down until you have finished. (Let me refresh your brain)- "My name was Salmon, like the fish; first name, Susie. I was 14 when I was murdered on December 6, 1973." The Lovely Bones, deals with every parents nightmare- the murder of a child, in this case their daughter. This book is worth a re-read. I recently re-read it and thought it was even better the second time around (I only did that with one other book - To Kill a Mockingbird).
The Lovely Bones is currently being filmed and due out in 2008.
Let me know if you have read it and let's hear your review. Have a book worth suggesting- let's hear about it.
