Am I the only one that gets at least 6 e-mails a day from some woman/man in Africa whose husband passed away (actually was killed by a band of rogue warriors) and has now left her/him with 5.5 million dollars. Here is the plea - she/he is dammed because she/he has no idea what to do with it, yet, she/he personally sought me out to transfer, yes, transfer all of that money into my personal account, if I just pay the $200 US dollars for the transfer and security fees. Amazing - what an offer. $200 US dollars for $5.5 mill - now that is some return on the dollar.

Apparently I am not the only person that receives this e-mail. I started to research it the other day (yes, I had some extra time on my hands to look up this stupidity) and found some very funny replies. So funny, I started to cry laughing when I read them and yes, I was alone, laughing hysterically - because these two responses where just priceless, this person should win 5.5 million dollars just for being hysterical.

Here is response 1-

Dear Mr. Boswell:
This is so amazing, why just yesterday I thought to myself, "geeze, my ex husband is so wonderful, he took all of my money, my house, my jewels and my car, what can I possibly give him in exchange, since I have nothing left - how can I make him richer?" Well, you just answered my questions? I would love for you to give him all of that money, I bet he could really use it all, now that he has a new lover, my ex best friend." So, tell me, what is it that you need? Social security numbers, bank accounts, ex friends vital stats? You name it, you have it, I say, lets all share the wealth together! - because as you know a happy family stays together.
Peace be with you Mr. Boswell,

Cynthia Martin

Response number 2

Dear Sister Mary Johnson;

Wow, that is amazing that an archdeacon had 5.5 million dollars- way to go Mary. And to think, your kindness found me and you want to spread and share the wealth, how kind of you. Tell you what, why don't you contact my ex husband, since he got the money, house, jewels and cars, he'll probably want this extreme act of kindness, so why not cut the red tape and give it to him immediately. What information do you need - Social Security numbers, year of birth, bank account numbers? You name it sister and you got it.
Yours in Christ!

Meredith Synder

I say we start a campaign and start responding to these nitwits, maybe they'll get the message. In all seriousness, please tell me there really isn't someone out there that fell for this schame - say no please ... $200 US Dollars? Really, Seriously? Stop the madness.

Ricotta - the hottest new trend in gourmet cheese shops

I read a very interesting article last night about ricotta cheese. Being Italian, it's in my blood, it's part of my heritage. As a child, I remember watching my grandmother, mother and aunt standing at the kitchen table during the Easter holiday making Italian Ricotta Cheesecakes, and other delights made with this by-product of mozzarella cheese, hoping that I would get a chance to scrape the bowl clean after they were through mixing their magic.

Ricotta is a creamy and delicately sweet cheese. In the summer months, many local dairies produce fresh ricotta which achieves its deepest flavor in early summer. The milk from cows which have been grazing on new-grown pasture's is readily available. This grass adds herbal undertones to artisanal versions of a cheese that long has been a mass-produced dairy department staple. Some artisanal cheesemakers use goat or sheep's milk. Fresh ricotta comes in a variety of versions from firm to creamy, wet or dry. In the south of Italy it is an essential staple of any good Italian kitchen.

Handcrafted ricotta now is in demand at gourmet cheese shops and farmers' markets.

Spoon it on berries, add as a finishing touch to pasta, put a dollop in soup.

A quick dessert, mix 1/2 cup of low fat ricotta in a bowl, add semi sweet coco powder, and a 1/2 teaspoon almond extract for a really nice and light dessert.

Mom's Italian Ricotta Cheesecake

(not for anyone on a diet) but it is really easy to make. Top with fresh strawberries, blueberries or raspberries a spring of fresh mint and drizzle with chocolate.

3 pounds ricotta cheese

9 large eggs

1 1/2 cups granulated sugar

Grated peel and juice from 1 orange

1/4 cup heavy cream

2 tablespoons pure vanilla extract

Confectioners' sugar, for sprinkling

1. Preheat the oven to 350°. Butter and flour a 10-inch springform pan and place it on a baking sheet.
2. Using an electric mixer, combine the ricotta, eggs, granulated sugar, orange peel and juice, cream and vanilla. Pour into the prepared pan and bake for 1 1/2 hours. Turn off the oven and let the cake rest inside for 30 minutes. Let cool, then sprinkle with confectioners' sugar.

Enjoy its wholesome goodness. To find fresh ricotta call your local farm market, or cheese shop. Most gourmet cook shops carry a local dairy's version. In Philadelphia it is available at the Reading Terminal Market, or the Italian Market on 9th Street in South Philadelphia (Claudio's or DiBruno Brothers).

Film Society Presents “Hollywood Goes to War”

(Cape May, NJ) The Cape May Film Society’s Memorial Day film program will be a great addition to your holiday plans--after the parades and picnics. The program is entitled “Hollywood Goes to War,” and the featured speaker is Hollywood actor/screenwriter JC Stinson, who says if you think the program will be all about combat, you’d be mistaken. “There aren’t as many combat scenes as there are clips demonstrating what makes a film truly remarkable,” he says. “There are classic elements of these films like the rogue enlisted man, the brutal training, the outsider. And we will leave plenty of time for discussion after the clips are presented and before the reception.” Stinson will present the most memorable moments from some of the greatest films ever made, and some work that’s off the beaten track as well.

“Hollywood knows war,” says Corbin Cogswell, Chair of the Programming and Membership Committee for the Society, “and the films honoring the heroes are among the most important and entertaining movies ever produced. And we’re planning a wine and cheese reception after the retrospective for members of the Society. This will be a perfect time to mingle with others who love the movies as much as you do.”

The retrospective will be held at the Cape May VFW on Congress Street. “That’s is certainly the most appropriate place for many reasons,” says Cogswell. “It is were we launched the Cape May Film Society in June 2007, and we definitely want to honor those who have served in the military by bringing this particular show to their lodge.” The program will be held on Memorial Day, Monday May 26, at 7:00 p.m., at the VFW with a wine and cheese reception to follow. For details, contact the Film Society at 609-884-6700.

Cost for this event is $10 or Free with Paid Annual Membership Dues to the Film Society.

The Cape May Film Society hosts the Cape May Film Festival, which is New Jersey’s premiere film festival dedicated to the support and presentation of creative, challenging, groundbreaking, film/video works by New Jersey filmmakers. The Society is also the region’s leading educational and cultural resource for youth and adult learners interested in all facets of the cinematic experience. I love my new house and am very well trained. Last week, we had a terrible storm and my new owners tried to get me to take a walk outside. The winds were over 50 mph and the rain was coming down so hard, it stung my face and nose. I refused to take my walk, and my owners didn’t know what to do. Could you explain to them how to have an “emergency backup plan” so I don’t have accidents in the house?

Signed, Wet and Whimpering Wheaton

Dear Wet,

First of all, congratulations on being adopted! Yes, we all know how terrible some of our shore storms can be. Some of us big hound dog types don’t mind the bad weather at all, (although our owners always seem a bit grumpy walking us). But many breeds simply do not care for wet or severe weather or any kind. On days you simply do not want to go out in the bad weather, ask your owner's to put down newspaper or a pee pad and explain to you where it is, and why it’s there. Most dogs will “hold it” anyway, until the weather clears, but for those who simply can’t, it gives them an acceptable option without having to soil the floors. Most dogs are smart enough to figure out why there is paper on the floor, but if your owner's have any doubt, they might want to temporarily secure you in a laundry room, etc. with paper on the floor. Some of us will go out if we wear raincoats or have an umbrella held over us. But there are just some days, it’s not fit for man or "dog" out there!

Dear Frisco,

I just LOVE to go for car rides! My mom takes me all the time when she goes to the store or is out running errands. But summer is almost here and on some days, it gets awfully hot in the backseat. Especially if she’s shopping for awhile. Some days, I feel as though I might even faint…when is it safe for my mom to take me for car rides?

Having Hot Flashes in a Honda

Dear Hot,

All dog owners should know the dangers of leaving pets in a hot car. We love car rides, and most of the year can wait patiently in the back seat for your return. By the way, I’m very glad your mom knows it’s never safe to have a pet ride on the front seat. Unless it’s very cold outside, we dogs ask you leave one rear window open a few inches for fresh air. But once the temperatures climb, a car can quickly become an oven and suffocate us. Even parking in the shade or leaving a window completely open is not enough to keep us from overheating in a car and possible dying from heatstroke. Stay inside and wait the storm out, there is no reason to hit the streets unless you are a duck. If you require emergency services, contact your local police department.

How to plan for future storms

What the city should do: Issue evacuation orders 48 hours before the storm hits, urging people in vulnerable zones to flee those areas by public transportation or their cars.

Worst-case scenario: A storm closes in on the city faster than expected. Evacuees are stuck in cars on closed roads. Though a death toll would likely be low, damage could be extensive.

What you can do: Keep three days’ worth of food, water, diapers, medication, and other supplies in a safe place. If you’re in a hurricane zone, buy flood insurance and snap photos of your house for future reference. Keep a prescription stash handy and pack a bag with copies of important documents, extra keys, rain gear and shoes, nonperishable foods, and at least $100.

<img style="border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-bottom: 0px" height="260" alt="Ducks are enjoying the opportunity of swimming in the street. If you’re evacuating, unplug appliances, turn off pilot lights and water, and put valuables you can’t take along in watertight containers. Fill your tank, grab a map, and get out of town—with your pets.

Technorati Tags: New Jersey Coastal storm May,May Storm hits coast 2008,what to do if a storm hits, high tide, flooding in Wildwood

Be Inspired!

What inspires us? What makes us want to create? What makes us want to grow and learn and the best question of all- is every thought and original thought or just another adaptation of another idea?

I can offer these tips on the process:

Inspiration from other sources is what creativity is all about. It seems that many people believe creativity involves pulling a completely brand new idea out of thin air or somewhere else... In truth, I feel creativity is an adaptive process that consists of looking at the same existing thing everyone else is and thinking about it differently.

Even Michelangelo believed that “the best of artists has no conception that the marble alone does not contain within itself.” He saw his sculptures within the mass of marble, and simply removed the parts that didn’t belong in order to “free the figures slumbering in the stone.”

Look in unlikely places for connections and angles that can enhance your idea. If only one aspect of another subject area meets your needs, roll like Michelangelo and get rid of the parts that don’t belong.

Words to think about over the rainy weekend.

Get creative, get inspired!

Not your normal things to do on a rainy day - For Adults

It seems as if the weather won't be cooperating this weekend and since it has been raining quite a bit here on the barrier islands I thought it would be good to share some ideas of what to do when it rains. Here are some good rainy day activities that you might find fun.

1. Surf - You’re going to get wet anyway so why not go surfing. The waves might be a little “mushy” but you can still have fun. The temps are a little better, but wear your wet suit.

2. Shop - From Cape May to Atlantic City you'll enjoy some of the best shops in all of NJ, and you'll be stimulating the economy...

3. Play miniature golf, yes, outdoors, so you get a little wet, it is still a lot of fun. (Ok, I know that I am really pushing it on this one, but hey, these are just a few ideas).

4. Eat - Pretend you're on vacation and it’s raining, so why not indulge in some of the great seafood cuisine of the east coast. We have tons of sushi places, and a lot of fine dining restaurants. Go local or go super fresh, either way you’ll be satisfied. Want to have total junk food? Go to the boardwalk and get everyone's favorite "Funnel Cake"! (I have no idea who this guy is, he just looked like he was enjoying his rainy day food fest!)

5. See a Movie - Go see a movie at Franks, the Beach Theater or in your living room.

6. Spa - Go to a spa, there are tons of them in the area.

7.Drive the island - One of my favorite things to do is to take Ocean Drive and go as far as I can. The scenery is great, and along the way you can stop at a variety of small joints for a brew and eats. One of my favorites is the Deauville, don't know why, but the view is good, the burgers are good, the crabs are good, and the fries are the best. You may just want to take a drive around the island to see what there is to see. Who knows you may find a sunny spot. Sometimes it only rains in certain areas. (Kind of like Hawaii).

8. Mojitos - I like to make a big pitcher of these and sit at a nearby jetty, on the ocean, watch the waves and boats go by as the rain comes down, and sip back some Mojitos. Sounds a little looney, but the rain makes me that way...

9. Go get a pedicure and manicure, it feels great and makes you feel great, and your hands and feet will appreciate that you did it for them.

10. Visit a lighthouse - Cape May Point Lighthouse, Hereford Inlet Lighthouse (North Wildwood), Absecon, Barnegate Lighthouse.

Technorati Tags: Lighthouses,Lighthouse of Cape May,Lighthouses of New Jersey,Mojitos,Pedicure and Manicure, driving on the coast, shopping in NJ,Eating on the boardwalk, funnel cake

Fun Rainy Day Crafts

You won't need a green thumb to make this sunflower-style porch decoration burst with vivid color -- just a plateful of favorite buttons.

CRAFT MATERIALS:

Large yellow paper plate

Small white paper plate

Scissors

Buttons

Glue

String or thin ribbon

Green ribbons

Time needed: Under 1 Hour

1. Start by snipping triangles from the rim of a large yellow plastic plate so that the edges look like flower petals.
2. Next, invert a dessert-sized white paper plate, center it on top of the yellow one and glue it into position.
3. Once the top plate has dried in place, glue on buttons of various colors and sizes, enough to cover the white surface.
4. Attach a loop of thin ribbon to the back of the yellow plate near an edge (you'll use this as a hanger). Finally, glue on green ribbons (about 2 feet long each) so they fly from the bottom

Technorati Tags: Sunflowers, rainy day crafts, craft projects, fun activities for the kids

This just in from Atlantic City Electric

Atlantic City Electric Mails Electric Safety Information

Mays Landing, N.J. – Atlantic City Electric’s Emergency Service Partnership Program recently completed mailing letters with a safety brochure, entitled “Electrical Safety for First Responders,” to more than 325 fire departments throughout its power delivery service territory.
“From an operational perspective, our emergency services responders play a key role in partnering with us to keep the public safe,” said Charlie Wimberg, Vice President, Atlantic City Electric. “On any given day, underground lines may be struck and/or wires could be down for a variety of reasons. The convention is the creation of Dr. Joseph Salvatore from when he served as Chairman of the Board for the NJ Historical Commission, 1993-97. Dr. Salvatore envisioned a forum where history organizations, small and large, from throughout the state could come together and address current issues facing the history community.

Fifteen years later, Dr. Salvatore and his wife Anne were presented the prestigious Maureen Ogden Award for lifetime achievement in New Jersey History. Ogden served as a New Jersey Assemblywoman from 1981-95 and was a firm supporter of NJ history. Her efforts resulted in achievements such as forming the first NJ History Task Force. The award was presented by Dr. Michael Zuckerman, Executive Director of Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts (MAC). Zuckerman recognized the Salvatores with great pleasure, stating that “it has been my honor to rank Joe and Annie among my closest colleagues, collaborators and friends.”

Dr. Salvatore and his wife have made significant contributions in historic preservation both in Cape May County and throughout the state. Together, they founded Historic Cold Spring Village in Cape May when they began collecting and restoring antique buildings on their property. The living history museum is currently celebrating its 27th year, providing the public with 26 historic buildings where the trades, crafts and lifestyles of early America are demonstrated and preserved. The couple also saved abandoned Hangar No. 1 in Rio Grande, which now serves as the Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum, boasting a collection of WWII aircraft and displays. Anne remains the unsalaried Executive Director of Historic Cold Spring Village, and Dr. Salvatore for the Aviation Museum. Both sit on several boards throughout the state and Southern Shore region, including the NJ Historical Commission and the Cape May County Culture and Heritage Commission; they continue their active work in promoting and preserving arts, history and culture within New Jersey.

The Salvatores accepted the award with great pride and to a standing ovation, as Anne credited her love of history to her travels as a child. An uncle, Fred Rath, served as the first director of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Anne and her family visited historic sites and living history museums all over the country, inspiring a lifelong passion for preservation. The Salvatores’ invited their grandchildren to join in the award ceremony in the hopes that they will also experience a love for history and become stewards of the past.

Historic Cold Spring Village is a non-profit Early American museum preserving Cape May County’s past located on Route 9, three miles north of Cape May City. For more information about the Village’s events and summer activities, please call (609) 898-2300, ext. 10, or visit www.hcsv.org. A beautiful garden is what they strive for during their favorite spring and summer seasons, but along with beautiful blooms comes a trove of pesky pest and insects that could ruin any garden in no time at all. The sad thing about this issue is that many people believe that there is only one way to get rid of these creatures, but there is another way.

When using chemicals to kill insects, keep in mind that they can also kill your favorite domestic pet. Toxic pesticides are considered an active poison. They are extremely dangerous to your health, your pet’s health and our environment.

Every year, thousands of domestic pets and wild life lose their lives to the ravaging effects of pesticide poisoning. Most pet lovers also enjoy gardening and the great outdoors. Little do they know what caustic ingredients are in the pesticides that are being sprayed on lawns. Taken for granted is the fact that most herbicides used by gardeners or sold in stores are safe.

This is scary, did you know that brands such as “Weed n’ Feed” and “Round Up” contain the same deadly cancer causing ingredients that are found in Agent Orange. Another synthetic poison found in these two well known garden products is 2,4-D. It is also the active ingredient found in “Killex.” It can cause loss of reflex in humans along with comas, kidney and liver failure. In dogs it is the number one killer causing malignant lymphomas, a form of cancer.

Sadly, just five percent of pesticides reach their target weeds and garden pest. The rest are absorbed into our earth, targeting our water supplies through a process called run off or simply just dissipates into our air. Major health damage can occur when toxic pesticides are absorbed through our skin, swallowed or inhaled. When not applied correctly, pesticides can settle on ponds, pools, children’s toys, pets left outdoors and even drift through open windows settling on our furniture, bedding and even our floors.

What we don’t realize is how wide spread pesticide poisoning really is. These caustic chemicals are virtually used many garden products. Here are some easy recipes to get rid of bugs naturally.

To keep ants out of the house or garden sprinkle ground cinnamon around base of house.

Sprinkle it on ant beds, to kill the ants (or they will travel to your neighbor’s yards). For your garden: sprinkle concentrated lemon juice round the whole garden, keeps ants & insects out of garden. Both are ok to use if you have pets or little kids around, safe for all to use & you can get the kids to do it for you without worry!

MOSQUITO/INSECT REPELLENT

Formula 1: Ingredients

Aloe Vera gel

Essential oils of citronella

Tea tree oil

Lavender oil

Stir all ingredients together
Mix becomes opaque.

Get rid of slugs and snails by spreading crushed eggshells where they are prone to travel. They won't travel over the rough surface and if they do, it's good-bye slug.

* You can also get rid of snails and slugs with yucky, cheap beer. Just fill a jar lid with beer and place it where snails and slugs like to hang out. It's best to get it as flush with the ground as possible, so you may have to dig a little indention in the dirt.

* Want one more slug remedy? Coffee is a great fix as well. Spread your used coffee grounds around slug or snail infested areas.

Ladybugs eat aphids. Most experts agree that purchased lady bugs are not always the best for controlling aphids and that it's better to attract them naturally. You can do that by planting: parsley, wild buckwheat, white sweet clover, tansy, sweet fennel, sweet alyssum, spearmint, Queen Anne's lace, hairy vetch, flowering buckwheat, crimson clover, cowpeas, common knotweed, caraway and black locust.

Give yourself a pat on the back.
Lastly, you deserve a little thanks for doing your part to protect the environment. If every gardener starts with their own back yard, it will make a big difference in our quality of life.

Meet the Artists Reception Saturday, April 12

Cape May Winery is currently showing “of wood and water”, an art exhibit of photographs by Tina Giaimo and block prints by Janet Payne through April 30th.

About the Artists

Tina Giaimo is an award-winning photographer who has exhibited
throughout Cape May County and North Jersey. She is the owner of Spirit Catcher Photography and her photos are in this year’s “Cape May Visitors Guide” which is distributed by the Cape May Chamber of Commerce. Giaimo works include images of trees and their surroundings from Hawaii, Costa Rica, Montana and New Jersey.

Janet Payne is an experienced artist and teacher who has won many awards for her graphic designs and logos. She has been involved in many community art projects since moving to the area. Walking through the store and seeing shelves stocked with beautiful products claiming to be "natural" or "organic" and my new over used action word and Madison Avenue's latest favorite "green" made me wonder if this is all a marketing gimmick.

Everything these days seems to be "green". But what is a true eco friendly product? An increasing number of environmentalists and activists are evaluating not only what a product contains but how it is produced and packaged. Here is how you can read a product eco friendly commitment.

Check the label - Are the ingredients listed as organic or all-natural? Better yet, is there a seal of certification from EcoCert, BDIH or USDA.

Scan the packaging - Paper packaging marked "post consumer" means recycled content was used to create it. Another green marker? Labels that are marked as having been printed solely with soy or vegetable based non-toxic inks. On bottles, look for the triangular recyclable symbol. Plastics with a number 1 or 2 inside the triangle, glass or cardboard are all easily recyclable. Most plastic lids and pumps can't be recycled; remove and recycle what you can.

Consider the company - The most green conscious companies don't limit their commitment to what they sell; they look at the environmental impact. Does the company power its plants with wind power or give part of its profits to local recycling initiatives? The company will usually trump these very important green factors on their branding and packaging.

Technorati Tags: Eco Friendly Products,All natural Soaps,Garden of Herbs,Eco Packaging,Soy Products,Recycled packaging and paper

1st ever Iron Chef Cook-off at the Copper Fish Restaurant in Cape May

The competition is heating up and the word is out on the street about the 1st inaugural Iron Chef Cook-Off to be held on April 2 starting at 6:30 p.m.

Where? The Copper Fish Restaurant in Cape May. I know I am a bit partial to this restaurant, but I just think they are one of the best in the Cape May City - always serving consistently good food.

The challenge is 4 well known area chefs, 4 courses, 1 mystery ingredient. The price is $35. Guess who one of the judges will be?

All are invited to cheer on contestants, but reservations should be made. Last weeks crowd at chef demo night was the largest I have ever seen (around 20), so be sure to make your reservations, this night is catching on and is a lot of fun.

You can make your reservations by calling Chef Geoff at 609.898.0354. Copper Fish Restaurant is located at 1246 Rte 109 (Across from South Jersey Marina) in Cape May.
